When I was about eight or nine years old I was asked to memorize a poem to recite at some church meeting.
I remember someone remarking,”She can’t memorize all that ! She is too young.”
Something rose up in me and I thought, “Oh yes, I can!” and I did.
Reciting the poem , I realized something else…. the power of words to captivate an audience.
But the words retained their impact in my own personal life , their message finding a permanent place in my heart that I have never forgotten.
Perhaps you have heard it before - but have not re-read in some time...I think it bears repeating so I have printed it below.
The author is unknown but since I first memorized it over 50 years ago, it is been around a long time - nevertheless, the message is still poignant today.
May the simply words speak to your heart, as they have to mine.
IF JESUS CAME TO YOUR HOUSE
If Jesus came to your home to spend a day or two --
If He came unexpectedly, I wonder what you'd do.
Oh, I know you'd give your nicest room to such an honored Guest,
And all the food you'd serve Him would be the very best,
And you would keep assuring Him you're glad to have Him there--
That serving Him in your home is joy beyond compare.
But -- when you see Him coming would you meet Him at the door
With arms outstretched in welcome to your Heavenly Visitor?
Or would you have to change your clothes before you let Him in,
Or hide some magazines, and put the Bible where they'd been?
Would you turn off the radio and hope He hadn't heard,
And wish you hadn't uttered that last, loud, hasty word?
Would you hide your worldly music and put some hymn books out?
Could you let Jesus walk right in, or would you rush about?
And I wonder -- if the Savior spent a day or two with you,
Would you go right on doing things you always do?
Would you go right on saying the things you always say?
Would life for you continue as it does from day to day?
Would your family conversation keep its usual pace,
And would you find it hard each meal to say table grace?
Would you sing the songs you always sing, and read the books you read,
And let Him know the things on which your mind and spirit feed?
Would you take Jesus with you everywhere you planned to go,
Or would you, maybe, change your plans for just a day or so?
Would you be glad to have Him meet your very closest friends,
Or would you hope they stay away until His visit ends?
Would you be glad to have Him stay forever on and on,
Or would you sigh with great relief when He at last was gone?
It might be interesting to know the things that you would do,
If Jesus came in person to spend some time with you.

If JESUS WERE TO SPEND SOME TIME WITH ME??? With me? me? Aw!!! I would be so excited...I would ask him for help, tell him I would like to have energy again, to be healthy again so that I can go for a walk with him, or perhaps even a run or how 'bout a hike. Oh that would be so nice, and I would be happy if he were to come in to my house and help me find all the dust that needs to be swept up and thrown out...you know all those bad choices I make? I would be SO VERY HAPPY if he were to convict me, to clean me, to be as white as snow so that I could be His VERY perfect daughter!!! I can't wait, will He arrive any minute I wonder? I'm waiting for His arrival.
Would you come over and visit if Jesus were over I wonder though too? WE COULD HAVE A JESUS PARTY!!!
Hey maybe this is why I don't sleep very often at night. Because the Bible DOES say that we should keep our lamps burning for Him to return...right? And we wouldn't "burn" a light during the day so perhaps He's coming during the night? (like a thief) Or maybe this is only or also an analogy meaning that we should keep our souls open for Him and not closed asleep.
For He IS the life-giver.
That would be a beautiful poem to have on the wall as a reminder, and Oh by the way, I'm not one bit surprised that you learnt all that as a young little girl. You were and still are an amazing woman.
