The Miracle Gift of Water
Isaiah 12:3 paints a beautiful word picture - "Therefore with joy you will draw water from the wells of salvation"
In John 4:10 Jesus says, " if you knew the gift of God and who it is who it is who says to you 'give Me a drink, you would have asked Him and He would have given you living water "
Water -- something we use every day. We take it for granted. We drink it and use it for cooking, washing dishes, clothes, watering our flowers and garden and flushing our toilets. Lakeside vacations or homes beside water are desirable. And we cannot imagine a little boy not having a puddle of water to stomp in!!
We know that no life - plant or animal or human - can exist without water.
Since we know how life-giving physical water is, should we not recognize how apt Jesus' using water to describe spiritual life is.
In Matthew 12:43 Jesus is teaching about unclean spirits, or demons.
He says that when an evil spirit is cast out of a man it goes through dry places seeking rest - yet finding none.
That doesn't really make sense, does it? If you are looking for rest, do you go out and wander in a dry desert? Would you not rather seek a shaded lake shore or at least an oasis? Any place with water, rather than a dry place that inspires thoughts of thirst and burning heat. .
So why would evil spirits purposefully avoid places with water?
We are all familiar with the evil spirits that Jesus drove out of a man that asked if they could enter the pigs. We might wonder why Jesus would give them what they asked for, but maybe Jesus knew something they didn't. There was water nearby and Jesus knew the pigs would rush into the water and the spirits would be tormented.
Why do evil spirits hate or fear water?
Why do evil spirits hate or fear water?
Science has given us an answer that illuminates the meaning of these passages.
Did you know that water is supernatural? That it does not follow the laws of nature or the rules of science?
Did you know that water is supernatural? That it does not follow the laws of nature or the rules of science?
God says in Romans 2 that in His creation He displayed His character and attributes so that they are clearly seen.
Would it not follow that water would be unique, even to the point of not following the laws of nature the God Himself ordained, if God wanted us to understand how life-giving His spiritual water is?
All, I repeat, ALL life needs water to survive and thrive. Without water there is no life. Science can describe water and its purpose in many ways but what science cannot explain is what quality water has that 'gives' life. Why life needs water they cannot say.
There are 7-10 ways that water's characteristics defy the laws of nature followed by all other matter.
Have you ever thought it was odd that ice floats on water? Other matter is heavier in its solid state than in liquid form, except for water, which is lighter. If it followed nature's rules lakes would freeze bottom up and all life in it would freeze and die.
Considering its chemical make-up water should be a gas at room temperature but it remains liquid..
It has a strong surface tension, allowing insects to walk on water.
Water is the universal solvent meaning that it has a unique ability to clean.
(You can google it and read about the ways that water defies science.)
So God created water to be a 'mystery' to impress us to know that without His life-giving word 24/7 we are in danger in the same way that we are in danger if we go too long without water.

In Ephesians 5:26 we are told that we are cleansed and sanctified by the Word. Just as water cleanses our bodies, the water of the word as we read it cleanses our souls.
Just as our physical bodies thirst for life-giving water, so also our souls and spirits thirst for and need the life-giving word of God.
So back to the demons that hate/fear water. Why? Because it is supernatural as well as symbolizing the power of God's word, and the life-giving Spirit within us, and even the symbolism is enough to torment them knowing what it represents and knowing they will face an eternal torment.
Water -- physical and spiritual - its life-giving power is a supernatural gift of God . Every time you take a drink of water, remind yourself to be thankful for the life-giving water flowing through your spirit. Next time you are thankful for freshly laundered clothes, ask yourself, does your soul need the cleansing power of God's word?
